a crack on LINUX CD distro

I got this SUSE 10.o CD1 broken (a physical crack in the middle)-(maybe 1st 'cluster' of CD).

Somehow I managed to have it copied and it works, in other words it's completed (finished) on 1st install.

Seems illogical that a crack CD can be installed and works out fine.

What I want to know is how do I CRC check the distro CD?

Many thanks in advanced

You know, good drive can read data from rather damaged CD's. It's redundancy. About checksumming - insert disk in drive and run md5sum /dev/cdrom .

Suse 10.1

Had similar problem. Mine looked like a carbon mark within the cd itself.
Kind of like seeing carbon deposits inside a diamond. I tried copying CD but failed. Had to return the 5 disk set to the newstand for my refund. Must be a bad batch of CD's during manufacturing process etc....

Thanks for the respond.

I guess my hewllet packard is very genious that's able to read inside a empty hole or on the other way the CD was already crack at the beginning of the production.

I ran MD5 from the desktop, magically it says OK.
I just couldnt believe myself.

It's not magic - it's redundancy. And a good drive. And don't overestimate a single crack, if it is not exactly along track. Don't underestimate it either. I hope you are burning a copy now?

What I dont believe is that a broken ( a long crack in the 'first cluster') disc can be copied + run + installed succesfully.

I ran from the SCSI CDROM at my XEON p3 and it doesn't work, so I copied the broken CD from the HP(source) to Pioneer(target) at my P4/3ghz and have it returned to the store.Unfortunately there's no more stock left and I was given another software as replacement.I was very lucky that I got 2 software from the 1pc money can buy.

It's a weird world.......
