a couple of issuess i need help with.

ok i will get straight to the point.

1) As some may know i had problems getting sound working on my computer. now i got it working, as in i can play music, but i can't get sound working for any other apps. For example my other computer i had, when KDE booted up i had a little jinggle play like windows does. don't hear anything. i set my email up and my messenger program to play sounds when i get email or when a contact is online. but i get no sounds. any ideas?

2) My internet provider is NTL and i have a 3mb connection. The modem is plugged in via USB. When i set it up i used 1 of the default USB drivers with mandrake (can't remember the name). When i selected it, it did a probe found the modem then set the rest of it up. browse the internet fine and all. The last 3 days im having to reinstall the modem. Any ideas as to why that is?

3) Can anyone recommend me a good easy to use firewall? when i used windows i had zonealarm. Was very easy to configure and i got nice little pop ups when software wanted to go on the net so i felt i new exactly what was going on. Is there anything like that for linux? i installed shorewall for a try and it stopped my internet and i did not know how to configure it.

Also are there any web sites out there that has like the top 10 apps for linux? for example has like the top 10 best media player, the top 10 best web-browser's etc. There is just so many different ones for linux its hard to find whats good and bad.

Thanks for your time in advanced

Sound: Have a look in Configure Your Desktop > Peripherals > Sound and check if the sound is enabled.

Firewall: Guarddog is a great little firewall. And it's mostly designed for KDE, though it will work with Gnome as well.

No idea about the modem though, Sorry.
