64 bit processor/ will it cause problems?

If I decieded to build my computer with the new amd 64 bit processor would I have complications. For instance, would all of the normal apps that I would be using compile and run the same way? Would I run into more unexpected problems? I remember reading a post here about a guy who could not get mplayer to compile because of his 64 bit processor.

What would be the advantages of using it? Where if any would I get speed gains?

Yes, they are fully downward compatible. To get the
best performance out of them you'd probably want to
recompile things using its native mode...

Gentoo or LFS would offer themselves for that approach,
and I believe both MDK and SuSE have opteron optimized
versions available. But you could just as well use any
other distro and just recompile their source-packages.

As for the amount of speed-increase: search on google,
there's been some benchmarking done.

Cheers,
Tink
