64 bit linux - confused about 32 bit apps
hi
i have a SuSE 9 32-bit PDC running nicely it serves up gallery2 via XAMMP and acts as a fileserver to the LAN (mixed XP and linux clients.) i also use iFolders in some cases i have an AMD 64-bit machine coming free and i want to upgrade the server to 64 bit SuSE 10.1 now this may sound like a super lame question ....... but ..... if i install the 64-bit SuSE (to get a boost in fileserver performance), does that mean that any of the other 3rd party apps i want to use (say gallery or XAMMP or iFolders or whatever) need to be 64 bit too ? or can i install 32-bit apps on a 64-bit server and 'just' get 32-bit performance ? i take it as read i can install an x86 distro on an AMD64 though - right ? thanks neill :newbie: (in case you were wondering !!) |
Most all good 32 bit applications should run as a 32 bit application even through a 64 bit processor. But software is one man's language vs another's language so a caveat will apply.

OK - that's reassuring :)
i'll 'suck it and see' with the precompiled stuff and i could always compile from source if i get stuck thanks |
