5250 / As400

Hello all,

We are currently using iSeries Access for Windows to access our AS/400, but now I'm looking into possibly replacing Windows on a few of our older pcs used only for 5250-sessions.
Which 5250 programs are available for Linux and which are the best ones?

Thanks.

Marcus,
Looking for the same app myself. Maybe have a look at:
http://linux.tucows.com/preview/8731.html: i downloaded TN5250 from, but haven't tested it yet.
IBM seems to have agood product by itself, but i do not know how to get it:
http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver.../access/linux/
Then there seems to be something like the tn5250 project where a lot of people devote time to; i do not know whether they have a finished app.
Let me know what you came up with.
Thanx
Chris

Thanks Chris.
We use Iseries Access on our Windows machines and I just saw that it became downloadable 22 Sep, so I'll give it a try.

Hi Marcus,

In the meantime i installed IBM's app: the 5250 emulation works just fine, is very similar to the Win version that comes with Client Access. Since i am new to this Linux game i had a lot of trouble installing the rpm, learned a lot too, though. Watch the dependencies...

I wonder if it is possible to mount a AS/400 share on the Linux box with this ? Via ODBC ?
Any thoughts are very welcome.

Greetings,
Chris

i'd like to try iseriesacces on a test linux box. i've downloaded the package from ibm site but the only thing i can get is the following error message:
5250: [ INFORMATIONAL ]: Build Date: 28 January 2005 (1.8).
5250: [ ERROR ]: Locale invalid: it_IT.UTF-8 was not found in localeList. Defaulting to en_US

in this environment. You may get a more descriptive message by running the
program as a non-root user or by removing the suid bit on the executable..

any suggestion?

Hi,

It has been some time since i installed the 5250 emulator, but:

- when do you get these error msgs ?
Looks mostly so called national language issues to me

- i assume you downloaded an rpm from the IBM site: can it be installed at all ?
(rpm -ivh IBMfilename.rpm)

- does your Linux box have these installed OK ?
GLibc 2.2
RPM 3.0
OpenMotif 2.0 or later for the 5250 emulator
unixODBC driver manager version 2.0.11 or later must be installed on the client. Go to the unixODBC Project web site for more information on the driver manager and to download the latest level of the driver manager

- i trust you checked this site:
http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver...ndex.html#faqs
There is also a link there to a user forum.

Let me know if i can be of further assistance

Chris
