2nd Xsession error

Hello!

I was trying to start a 2nd X-session by

Ctrl-Alt-F1
$startx --:1

and I get the error:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

Now from what I have been able to assertain from searching the web is that some systems do not support mulitiple x sessions...is this my case or am I overlooking something?
I am using an old laptop (PII 300Mhz) to attempt this.

Do you use a login manager (gdm, kdm, xdm)? Your display manager needs to be setup to accept the login. The command used to connect to another X session is: X :1 -once -query [hostname]
