24-bit audio files play as static in FC4-xine
 

i'm fairly new to linux. i believe i am running sound through alsa having used both kaffeine and mplayer with xine backend. both programs play 16-bit 44.1khz wave/flac/mp3 and most other formats perfectly. however when i try to play 24-bit/96khz wave/flac files all i hear is static. i have all the proper hardware for 2-channel high def sound. turtle beach catalina-24/96 and an optical connection. i have been able to play the files in windows so i know my computer is capable. i am wondering if xine supports 24-bit audio files and what the problem might be? i am running fc4 with kde installed for gui. i have not been able to find anything on the internet regarding this except for one similar post with no reply.. appreciate any help

so you can't get it to play 24b in any programs (in linux)?

got newest drivers installed.

i doubt xine can't play 24, but you never know.

mplayer has to.

yeah no programs will play... i have digital optical output ... IEC 958 or whatever enabled in Kmix... so the digital audio out is working, the software just won't handle 24b... mplayer does the same thing as xine/kaffeine, just static is reproduced. i was wondering if it was alsa? should i switch to oss? do i need to reconfigure xine? i believe all the drivers i have are good.. i am running the envy24 ice driver... everything works fine except the 24-bit audio files... and they do work in windows.

you could try oss obviously.. but..

i would also make sure you had ALL the sound systems you can pack on the pc, just for times like this when you want to 'test' different sound servers.

and make sure-- of course that you have ALL the alsa programs installed as well.

make sure alsa-utils is the ONLY alsa program loaded (or server loaded) when you boot... ie. don't have 'alsa' booting as well.

i know this might sound confusing, but if you have tooo many sound servers/programs 'booting' when you start the pc, it can cause problems.

this is why i use webmin because you can easily 'see' what is booting before hand, and ajust anything right-there-and-then.

use gstreamer-properties as a way to set up your sound server... it's gnome based, but it will run in other managers if you have gnome-base installed (and whatever other dependencies the prog needs).

webmin? what is that just an installed package? also how do i edit the booting properties in FC4... is there a file that i should look at to see what is being loaded on boot? forgive me i am new to linux... it takes me sometimes days to get simple things working but i like it so much it's worth it. and once i do something i don't forget .

so maybe gstreamer will be better at playing 24-bit?? i tried to use gstreamer in amarok but it didn't work... i'll try it again..
(i think i need to reinstall the gstreamer package because the commerically included version doesn't support the right audio formats)

there is probably something similar in fed4 which will help you see what is booting and what is not.. and let you change it, but webmin is more complete.

gstreamer-properties is a program which helps you set up your audio/video. it is quite new but becoming a standard because of it's thoroughness and ease of use.

it will help you set up your sound-sever mostly.
