2 Newbie questions, please

I just ordered Susi 9.2 Pro for my old laptop, I have heard that Linux will work on older machines, I am new to Linux but I already have two questions: 1) Can the software be updated to 9.3 easily, like with a small download? 2) I will need boot disk, are there any images I can download anywhere?

Thank you,

You will definately be able up ugrade/patch your kernel and installed packages that way, or you could simply use a 9.3 disc and upgrade that way.

You can use the installation cd/dvd to make a boot disk, I'm not sure if you get offered that option during the install phase.

1) Since SuSE is a commercial distribution, upgrading to 9.3 means buying 9.3. You can download a stripped-down version (I don't know what's missing. SuSE claims some software rights make it necessary to leave parts out on the download ISO). The download is large (and slow if you are using a modem). Expect many, many hours to download via modem. Then burn the ISO to cds/dvds.
2) Check the SuSE documentation. There are instructions on how to make a boot disk for the installed version. Otherwise, you are SOL.
Otherwise, you could try knoppix (free to d/l the full compressed version), or order the cd (something like 5 USD). It boots into German by default, but, when you put the cd in the drive and power up, at the boot prompt, just enter "knoppix lang=en keyboard=us" and you're home free (you will, however, have to experiment with the keyboard to find the equal sign. It's somewhere in the bottom row of keys).
