2.4.20 Kernel Freezing
I am running Slackware-current (up to date as of December 2) which means I am using glibc-2.3.1 and gcc-3.2.1. I compiled the 2.4.19 kernel just fine and used it for quite some time. Over the last week I have attempted to use the 2.4.20 kernel with no success. I started by doing a make oldconfig and basically using the settings from my 2.4.19 (but I did go through and make sure they all made sense). Then I started from scratch and configured it all by hand...
Anyway, what happens is it detects my Promise Ultra100 card, just like 2.4.19 does, locates my CDROM drive on hda and CDRW drive on hdc like 2.4.19 does and just locks up from there. I have disabled pretty much everything that isn't essential in my mind (I did disable frame buffer, but I still have scsi emulation and stuff setup to run hdc as a ide-scsi device). Anyone else run into problems with 2.4.20 in particular to the Promise PDC20267 controller. The reason why I think it might be related to that is typically after it displays: hda: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1212, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdc: CD-RW CRX100E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive it moves on and displays hde: IBM-DJNA-371350, ATA DISK drive hdg: IBM-DPTA-373420, ATA DISK drive but the 2.4.20 kernel just locks up on after the hdc: line. Thanks, John |
Is there any more info in /var/log/kernel.log?
Maybe you should give it a go w/ enabling a whole bunch of stuff (even if it seems like you don't need it), and see if it'll work. |
Unfortunetly there is no log of error. Coincidently one of my hard drives just died and after removing it form the system the 2.4.20 kernel boots correctly... scary.
