100% io wait on slackware 13.37 64bit on nearly idle system

I have a problem with having unknown process(s) result in 33, 67, and 100% io wait seen on top, mpstat and/or system monitor. Typically 1, 2 or all 3 of the following applications are running, konqueror, ktorrent, and kmail. When this happens, I see 1, 2 or all 3 cores of a Phenom II x3 720BE at 100% load and the system stops accepting input and playing music and/or video freezes until the iowait disappears. This occurs for about 10-60 seconds per incident. At 33 and 67%, some things work, but others are locked until it clears.

Its like the system started swapping, but with under 2GB used of the 4GB installed. Most of the time this occurs with no swap space used at all of the 24GB available. There doesn't appear to be any major seeking or usage of the 2 hard drives (1TB and 2TB both 7200RPM) nor the optical drive (LG 12X DVD burner).

The only other clues are the following processes from ps -ef:
hald-addon-acpi
[kworker/2:2]
[scsi_eh_6]
[usb-storage]
kdeinit4: kded4 [kdeinit]
appear frequently in top when the iowait goes to 100%.

This problem occurred after I turned on CPU-FREQ. But subsequently after turning it back off, the problem persists to plague my system.

This an intermittent happening for on average 1 minute every 2-4 hours.

Note I have used slackware on and off since 0.99.
