I am not even sure to understand what you write. Sorry.
What I mean is that the display transforms all non-ascii characters into something o=F9 for ù, even when the message has been received alright months ago and since has been opened in Mutt under Debian many times, but the effect is noticed only now under Linux Mint Rafaela.
As I cannot find a setting in .muttrc nor /etc/Muttrc which might be responsible, as all
those which concern MIME and 8bit are set to identical values in the old and the new configuration,
maybe I am missing a library of other piece of software external to mutt.
Thanks anyway for your help.
P.S.: Neither the terminal nor the vi/vim or GVim instances in use can (alone) be made responsible as they function normally, when mutt is not employed.
