[Mutt mail-client] I see quoted printable instead of 8-bit everywhere

Good morning.

I moved my configuration-files from a dysfunctional hard-disk to a user-account on a different system and thus have to work on an old installation of Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela instead of my beloved Debian.

As I compile Mutt from sources as before, I do not understand, why everything that concerns the mail-client is now displayed as quoted printable. The man-pages to mutt or muttrc do either not contain or do not convey the information that I am missing... my English may fail me, too, as always.

Here are screen shots of my inbox and one of a message sent, which I wish to re-send after modification.

Do you mean that the ASCII double-quote character is being translated to a Unicode (UTF-8 or UTF-16) code-point?

(Corresponding to what you might see from the HTML “ / ” metacharacters?)

I am not even sure to understand what you write. Sorry.
What I mean is that the display transforms all non-ascii characters into something o=F9 for ù, even when the message has been received alright months ago and since has been opened in Mutt under Debian many times, but the effect is noticed only now under Linux Mint Rafaela.

As I cannot find a setting in .muttrc nor /etc/Muttrc which might be responsible, as all those which concern MIME and 8bit are set to identical values in the old and the new configuration, maybe I am missing a library of other piece of software external to mutt.

Thanks anyway for your help.

P.S.: Neither the terminal nor the vi/vim or GVim instances in use can (alone) be made responsible as they function normally, when mutt is not employed.

The effect is not observed with a current release of neomutt.
I shall contact the mutt community for help.

As I have given up and prefer my wife's temporary discomfort to continuing my struggle against Mint Linux.

The problem with Mutt is *solved* now, after I have first installed a Mint Betsy over an existing Mint Rafaela, then abandoned just all that remained of “Mint”. Basically, I am working again on a Debian Buster/Sid, as it had been on my old machine.

And ALL WORKS NOW. Ω
