re-installed the package, restarted the service then gave the command
'mysqladmin -u root password root', it gave me a o/p
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

using RHEL 6.1

If you're trying to login, its --password[=password] https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/mysqladmin.html or just use mysql instead of mysqladmin.
