[Debian] Sound stopped playing

I'm on Debian Jessie (stable). Sound used to work fine. (Debian configures a lot for you.) One day I start up and there is no sound. Started troubleshooting. All mixer channels are turned up. (Turning up master volume glitches the other volumes in a weird way I have not seen before.) Strangely sound plays fine as root user. Normal user was already in audio group.
Are there some cache/lock/configuration files I can try to delete? Any idea what is going on?

Hey there!

You don't say which DE you are using. Nevertheless, check out this thread for a bunch of tips:

I'm using XFCE.
I think the problem is Pulse audio is the default sound device. I tried to override it with a .asoundrc file to no avail. I'm not willing to uninstall Pulse, because I need it for LMMS.
My guess is I either need a way to properly configure Pulse, or a way to tell ALSA to directly use the sound card. The configuration for ALSA is Greek spaghetti to me.
For now I circumvent the problem by removing all the Pulse configuration as describe here:
