'Application initialization failed: couldn't connect to display ":0.0"'

Hi,

we use Perforce for source code control. I tried to execute the 'p4 diff Makefile' command and got this error:

'Application initialization failed: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable'

I then followed the suggestion in another thread on this forum and set my DISPLAY variable to :0.0

$ env |grep DISPLAY
DISPLAY=:0.0

Now the error became:

'Application initialization failed: couldn't connect to display ":0.0"'

How do I fix this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Tet

p4 is a command line program. You should only get that error with p4v which is graphical. Do which p4 to make sure it is really the perforce client.

I think the error was caused by tkdiff, not p4.
The command I executed was :
p4 diff Makefile

and I found out later that my environment variable P4DIFF was set to tkdiff. I changed P4DIFF to the regular diff program and the problem went way. I'm fine now. Thanks for the help.
