Question 'amavisd stop' Command doesn't work

I'm trying set up a spamserver using RH9 with spamassassin and amavis. I have managed to install the majority of the software and have gotten to the stage of testing amavis by stopping the service but everytime I try it says

"No PID file /var/amavis/, can't stop the process"

I have no idea what the PID is meant to have in it and it doesn't exist on my machine.
Can anyone give me some help to create this file manually or if anyone has any other ideas it would be very much appriciated.

many Thanks

If this is the spamfilter described at, there will be no PID file if you have never started amavisd, just move on to next step and run 'amavisd debug'. The PID file contains the Process ID of the currently running amavisd and only exists while amavisd is running.
