$PATH incorrect

how do I add directories to the path variable on a permanent basis? in KDE (among others), /sbin is not included. If I go to a console (ctrl+alt+f1) everything is fine. I am root either way.

I use FC4 on an Acer Aspire 3004 laptop.

/etc/profile is where the system wide path is set, just follow the syntax already present in that file. /sbin should be in the path for root, but not for normal users. I know you are not running KDE as root, right? Hint, hint, hint...

of course not. I mean root terminal window. I do not have this problem on my other computer.

Just checking...:) Yeah, /etc/profile is where the path environment variable is set system wide.

/etc/profile includes /sbin in path. (as expected, since it is included when I log on as root directly)
