x Stopped working after packages uninstall

Hi !

I was in the process of creating openldap server on Centos 5.3 ( 64 bit).
I installed the required RPMs through yum.To my surprise, the command "slappasswd" was giving errors and manual search revealed that the same was not there on the system. I tried to remove the openldap RPMs through yum but found that as many as 244 packages were depending on it and had to be removed before openldap could be removed. Finding no other way, the packages were uninstalled. I reinstalled openldap and found that "slappasswd" started working. After rebooting the system, I found that the graphical login screen was not appearing but the following message was getting displayed on the screen:
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: Disabled for 5 Minutes.

I installed all the gnome related packages again and still the problem is the same.

I tried another operation -- after logging in through CLI, I ran "startx". The graphical screen appeared and the programs in various menus are working OK but desktop is not having any icons. Also desktop does not respond to any operations.

Can some suggest what could be the issue and how to get "x" started at boot time ?

Thanking In Advance

Hi !

I was able to get all the icons back on the desktop screen by installing nautilus related packages as:

yum install nautilus*

After rebooting, and starting graphical login, I got all the desktop icons back.

But the smal issue still persists:

When booted, the system does not go the grahical login ( as it used to do prior to this problem) but gives following error:-
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: Disabled for 5 Minutes

If I login at console in text mode and run "startx" everything works fine.

Can some one help in resolving the issue?
