X server prob

I have 845 Glly intel board. RH 9 (2.4.20-8) had been installed there for last 3 years.

It starts with graphical interface. But in last Dec. the X-server has been corrupted.
It trys to launch x-server but fails.

The following messge appears after failure:
'could not init font path element
Unix /:7100, removing from list.
Fatal server error, could open default forn "fixed".'

I have tried to reconfig X11XF86config with new one x11xfconfig configure and tried to launch it. But it failed again.

Also shutdown now does not shutdn the machine. alt+ctrl+del takes to inint6 and hangs up.

Can I mend the X-server without re-install??

Any EXPERT help?

Thanks.

Just a guess but did any of your partitions fill up with no available space? Perhaps /tmp is full?
