I don't known your budget.
If you can buy an entry level server (for example an Ibm) is sufficient to see if it's present a certification for Red Hat 5.
If you're planning to assemble components i don't think you will have many problems if you do not use graphical interface and if you can get a raid supported (if you need it).
In any event, if you can, you might try to use the iso livecd on the machine you should make sure any problems.

Hi,
We've recently started using Sun hardware at work for our x86 based servers. I'd suggest taking a look at the range available - the X2100 is a nice machine you can usually pick up at a very reasonable price.
It's also certified for Red Hat, and is available with RHEL if you want the whole package. Check out Sun's site here: http://www.sun.com/software/linux/
Cheers,
Steve
p.s. We're actually using them for VMware, but we're pleased with our X4200 systems.

In general, stick with Intel based products for Linux (motherboards, NIC's, graphics, wireless cards). You're pretty much guaranteed compatibility wit Intel. I use CentOS 5.1x64 with an Intel dual socket motherboard and it works fine.
I just built two entry-level servers based on the Tyan s2925 motherboard. Running CentOS 5.1 just fine.
This board support Athlon X2 and Opteron processors. Once you flash the BIOS to the latest version (2.0 at time of writing) it supports the Phenom processors. I have Phenom 9550s.
