To automatically upgrade i need to connect to a FTP server.

Now do i have to allow wordpress access via apache to the machine it is on or do i have to create a ftp server on another machine with the files on it? i.e a freenas box

Reason being is that i'm following the steps and every step mentions an FTP to login to.

So i could create an FTP on ubuntu or just use my freenas box that is handy?

I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve here, if you are trying to access the admin panel/dashboard of your installed wordpress, you can do that from your browser, FTP is not required here, only apache will do.
