windows-style dns/dhcp server setup with dynamic updates

this is my first post on this forum, hopefully you guys can help me out...

i'm trying to setup DNS and DHCP in such a way that the DHCP server updates the client's A record on the DNS server automatically - or creates one if it doesn't already have a DNS record.

i've found many tutorials that taught me a lot about this stuff, but none have actually gotten me up and running the way i'd like.

i have this line in both my named.conf and dhcpd.conf:
include "/etc/rndc.key";
i can start BIND just fine, but when i start DHCPD i get
Can't open /etc/rndc.key: No such file or directory
what's the deal? the file exists - i'm looking at it. also, why can named find it but not dhcpd?

btw i'm running bind9 & dhcpd3 on openSuse 10.2

if anyone could help i would be most greatful

Follow the instructions on this link -

Your problem is that generally /etc/rndc.key is set so that only the user BIND runs as and root can read the key. In the DHCP.conf file, you need the copy the key out, not reference the location where it can be found.
