why does the ios mail client make thousands of connections to my IMAP server a day?

just noticed it since i started running an IMAP server, thunderbird and the android mail clients make 1 connection, login and then continually update mail until they've been closed/powered off. But i see 30-50 different connections and logins per hour from 1 iphone. Anyone know of a way to make it behave? doesn't particularly cause problems, but kinda clutters the logs. Using courier w/self signed certs

Check with the user of that device and see if they are willing to change the time between polls of your server.
Live with it.
Use fail2ban and ban them for 30 minutes after every 5 connects to your server, then they'll change their polling frequency.
