Why different mail server responses on port 993 143

I have a dovecot mail server. In my firewall settings I have:
Code:
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 993 -j REDIRECT --to-port 143
When I do test connections to these ports from a remote host I get:
Code:
$ telnet mail.ohprs.org 993
Trying 98.102.63.107...
Connected to mail.ohprs.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
^]
telnet> quit
Connection closed.

$ telnet mail.ohprs.org 143
Trying 98.102.63.107...
Connected to mail.ohprs.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE STARTTLS AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN AUTH=GSSAPI] Dovecot ready.
^]
telnet> quit
If port 993 is forwarded to 143, why don't I get the same response in both cases?

Probably because port 993 is SSL and Telnet isn't.

Yes, I get that, but if 993 is being forwarded to 143 then why would the listener (Dovecot) not respond consistently as if it received the request on port 143?
