You can setup a dns server on any linux or unix platform for free you just have to make sure that the company you bought your domain from point the domain to your dns servers to resolve any look up's made. You will then have to make sure that your dns server is accessible from the internet on port 53 tcp & udp.

thanks for ur imput i am aware of that. i have www.tdclan.com registered and i have a website running on HTT://24.20.177.228 it is a static ip but everything im reading on to have your own dns server you need 2 static ips. am i wrong? im a bit confused on how to go about this. now any tutorials that explain. or a servis that will just redirect to my home ip when you type that in the browser. i also heard of these guys that have a free dns server but im a bit confused on it. http://www.everydns.com/ thanks.

and also i have DMZ turned on going to my server so all the ports should be open. or is that bad?

As far as setting up bind9, here are a couple of links that I found helpful. BTW, I had bind9 with dynamic DNS up and running quickly on my lan when I was a total novice using these links.

DNS_and_DHCP link and Bind9_config link.

The links are a little dated (Ubuntu Hardy) but the Bind and DHCP configuration should still be the same. There are also some additional links at the top of those pages with more information on setting up bind.
