What email system do you prefer?
I have used exchange before. It was nice but it's MicroSoft. I have been using gmail for organizations and its pretty good. But I am looking to go back into doing my own again. It seems qmail is popular. I would like to build one redundant thats well virus protected and easy to backup. Maybe have a couple servers running together like a raid or cluster. So if one fails or freeze whatever and the other keeps going then once the other is back online they catch up with each other. I would like to setup the smtp where it could be used by other computers in my network to send outgoing mail from monitoring tools and such. Anyways. any suggestions please.

Postfix is a very flexible and powerful solution.
http://www.postfix.org/BASIC_CONFIGURATION_README.html
http://www.dovecot.org/
I have also used qmail. If you choose to use qmail, be sure to use the Life With Qmail document.
There is a greater level of development and support for Postfix these days. I believe that Postfix and Qmail require less attention than Exchange.

I agree. Postfix.
Postfix with Dovecot is a great combo.
Um,.. if you are looking for all-in-one stuff... Zimbra is ok.

DO you think one of these would work great for multi-domains?

All of them support multiple domains. Would be silly not to.
I've had some good experiences with Postfix + Dovecot. I also like MS Exchange (I know I'm dirty ).

I'll give postfix and dovecot a shot. I have had an exchange serve before but they are a pain. Plus it cost to dang much. Btw Zetec, your right. It is silly not to support multiple domains. That's why MS made the silly mail server called, "MS-Exchange Server Standard" It only supports one domain. You have to the Enterprise version and even more $$$$ to use it. That's why I am going with Linux

I find that sendmail works fine for a relay.
Aside from that-- Barracuda and Exchange is what I work with.
I dig Zimbra.

Arh. I stand corrected. . Is that on the Exchange 2007 stuff or 2003? I've not really used the 2007, 2010 exchange much.
One of the reasons I prefer Exchange is because of the interaction with Outlook and Active Directory (obviously as it is MS software).

When I used 2003 Standard, I was restricted to 1 domain. I would have to purchase the enterprise. I tried to get around it but I couldn't.

Do you mean one active directory domain or internet domain? I'm sure I've had customres use more than one internet domain on Exchange 2003. I'll have to go check now. .

I was doing one AD domain and then I wanted to add other internet domains. I kept getting the boot. I would use exchange again if I could get it to work. I could use 2003 standard or 2007 standard. I have both.
