what do I have here


what is the 46600192, how can I delete it

Here is the output of ls -al

its the size of the directory you are currently in.

if you really want it gone you can remove all the files in the directory then remove the directory itself.

there are only a few files in that directory and they are small

i'm not really sure why its 46 mb.

ls for directories reports on the size of the inodes + filenames and metadata of the files in the directory.

I assume the first file created in this directory was cli_1.trc? My guess is that there are 10,000 empty directory slots that are not big enough to hold the filenames with 5-digit numbers.

Maybe there used to be many files in there.

If this bothers you, back the files up, remove and recreate the directory, then restore the files.

As above, the size increases as the content, but when the content decreases, the size of the dir inode does not.
If you really want it to be more accurate, do as berndbausch says.

that is what happened. I did have a lot of large files in that directory and deleted them. Thanks Very much to all.
