I'm not sure if this is the rigth spot but anyway:

I've gotta fix some things up on a linux web server.
For a start if I try to ssh in using putty or whatever, or try just to login to ftp.. it connects and then refuses the password/user.

The passwd file contains:
user(I'm logging in as):x:554:554:thedomain.com.au:/home/user:/bin/bash
sshd:x:74:74::/var/empty/sshd:/dev/null

I'm not sure why it would refuse me on ftp...

also there are a few wierd things like I can't find where apache is, or phpmyadmin for that matter.
There is the standard var/www but I can't find where any of the other components are.

So I have a few problems, can anyone shed any ligth on my ftp problem for a start?

Hi,

check whether your vsftpd service is running or not.
What distro are you using? Better try by disabling the iptables.
Which version of apache you installed as the default location is /var/www/html. May be the installation is not done properly.

the server is actually in a server database so I can only access it remotely, I'd have no idea about what distro it is.
I don't have command line so can't currently check a lot of things...

I'm trying to get more info from the server owner but I'm not sure they know them self.
