Web based server admin recommendations please
Howdy all,
I am planning on setting up my first dedicated server machine. I want to use a Debian/Ubuntu server installation, but I want to use a web based administration. I plan on using this server as file(ftp & SMB), print, media and maybe HTTP server.
I plan on using Mediatomb for the media, so I know that I can use it's existing web based interface. I will most likely be using ProFTP. I am hoping that there is a web based interface that can do system administration (users, package management and so on).
I looked at webmin, but that looks like it may be overkill. I also saw SME Server, but that is CentOS based and I have no experience with CentOS. Anyone here have some ideas or suggestions?
@jkzfixme - that should be www.webmin.com not .org
@Phin666 - it does all this: http://doxfer.com/Webmin/WebminConfiguration and more. It's designed to help you administer a server environment easily, it's not a software manager. If you need package management you need to have a centralised repository server and a method of managing the packages you have.
There is no longer an official Debian package for Webmin, AFAIK. Not to say you couldn't use it. I'd guess there is probably an Ubuntu package for Webmin, but I don't know for use.
We use SWAT for Samba admin, and the CUPS web interface for managing CUPS. I haven't really seen a need for anything else.
It actually does do package management , System > Software Packages. I personally like it , of course there are many other ways to skin the cat , I just find this one particularly useful and quick.
