Way to automate profiles

Hi all,

Appologies if the terminology of the subject is wrong.

I am building up an OpenSuSE server (10.3) and installing a service called NxServer. This allows users to connect from virtually anywhere in the world on low bandwidth/high latency connections and have a very useable desktop.

The idea is that I will have the server here in my office and slowly migrate users across from LTSP servers scattered across the country. At the moment I am simply trialing this idea.

I'm not an expert at linux but I learn as I go along.

Is there a way to automate the creation of 'profiles' when I create a new user on the system? By this I mean have access to all the required applications on the desktop (and configuration where need be), have KDE personalised, links to home and group directories etc etc. Esentially all this means is that when I create a new user, all I will need to do is log in to the workstation and configure minor things like email etc.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Cheers

look at man adduser or useradd,
usually skeleton profiles are in /etc/skel

A minor point: I would have said "useradd and adduser".

They are often different programs & I suggest reading both man pages to decide which is more appropriate.
From the adduser man page (in SimplyMEPIS 3.3.2):
Quote:
adduser and addgroup add users and groups to the system according to command line options and configuration information in /etc/adduser.conf. They are friendlier front ends to the low level tools like useradd, groupadd and usermod programs, choosing Debian policy conformant UID and GID values, creating a home directory with skeletal configuration, running a custom script, and other features. adduser and addgroup can be run in one of five modes:
I don't know if they are different in OpenSuSE (or Slack).
