Want to replace M$ server with Linux

I am maintaining a M$2000 server with Exchange Server 2000. My boss wants to replace with Linux instead of investing for 2003 or higher. Although I am using Linux in one of my machines, I never installed a server, domain controller, mail server in a linux platform.

Can anyone tell me what do I need for this setup so that I can try it in a lab environment?

I think they are quite good.

This is no small task, a migration from one system of doing things to another. In fact, where I work, we currently have a FreeBSD/Windows Server 2003 mix using openldap, postfix, samba, etc., and the majority of users use openoffice and thunderbird. While this cuts costs dramatically, there are features that the users want that are forcing a switch to an active directory domain.

I would double check that you will be able to accomplish everything you want to accomplish with your new setup before implementing, which means a lot of reading for you.

Good choice... go with Linux.

These days most setups are easy... I say, use ubuntu server: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatI.../serveredition

The best thing I like about ubuntu is sensible defaults. You shouldn't have much trouble setting up things with ubuntu...

samba + ldap

the only thing that your users will miss are some of the feature within Exchange. Otherwise, Linux will do everything Window$ can do. I would suggest you build a Linux server with sendmail, squirrelmail, samba, and ldap running parallel with your current Windows servers.

IBM has a redbook on migrating to linux. You might try searching for "redbook linux ms migration".

Also, there is a Migration chapter in either "Samba3-Byexample" or "Samba3-HOWTO". Also, the latest "Using Samba" has more AD & LDAP info then the previous ones.
