VSFTPD gives error 500 when trying to chmod

I encountered a strange behavior on one of my servers i never had before:
When trying to chmod files or directories (SITE CHMOD) the server returns
Quote:
500 Invalid command
chmod_enable=YES is set in vsftpd.conf (should be default anyway).

Any ideas?

Are you connecting as the anonymous user? It won't work.
Have you restarted vsftpd?
Is there anything in the logfiles?

No, all users are local users.

I don't understand the invalid command error. Had permission denied in situations, where i allowed only some cmds, but never had invalid command.

No entry in the logs, i am really clueless.

I do linux administrative tasks for about 15 years now, but i have no great experience with vsftpd.
