VMware server - Virtual NIC wont work after mainboard has been replaced
 

Morning everyone

This is more of a VMware Server question than an ubuntu question. I have vmware server running on my laptop. I use it for alot of testing before I start deploying changes to my production servers. I have a WinXP virtual machine which I use for the 'rare' occasion where I must use windows. I noticed that ever since my mainboard failed and has been replaced last week I cannot get my virtual nic to work. this is not specific to the virtual machine as it affects all the virtual machines I am running.

I have enabled VT in the bios of the new MB and I have re-run through /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl just to make sure that things should be working properly.

All to no avail unfortunately.

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 with Vmware 1.5, I was running 1.4 which still didn't work, so i tried upgrading and this didn't change anything at all.

has anyone experienced similar problems like this before? if so how were you able to get past it? so far I have to use a separate machine with windows at the moment and I cant do my testing which is very frustrating.

Ok I am really kicking myself in the butt today. I forgot to remove the previous Mac address settings from the udev configuration on my Ubuntu installation, as the Mac addresses for eth0 were caches the new mac addresses for my wireless and Lan from the new mainboards were coming up as eth2 and eth3 instead of eth0 and eth1.

by deleting the lines from /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and rebooting, and then rerunning through /usr/bin/vmware.config.pl I was able to resolve the problem.

If you ever migrate a linux VM from one vmware server to another you will also need to delete the contents of this file in order to get your network card working again.
