VMware Server 1.0.4 issues in Linux....

've had trouble with every virtualization app I've come across but I've come closest with VMware. My system is Debian Lenny/Sid with a custom kernel. As in the subject line, I'm trying to install VMware Server v1.0.4. I get this error and by reading it I can't figure it out.

I download the vmware-server-"version".tar.gz. I gunzip, tar -xvf, cd /vmware-server-distrib, and then run ./ I answer all the questions and when I come to building a modules for VMware, it freaks out and aborts.

If anyone could offer their expertise in VMware and Linux, I would be very appreciative and I'm willing to give any additional info needed to solve this issue. The error in my terminal window is this...

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/lib/modules/]

That's actually a very common problem. The way to fix it is with a 3rd party patch, which I used to install vmware on a custom 2.6.23 kernel. Here is one of several links to download the patches from.

Here's a link about the need for the patch.
