VMware ESX Server

What other services can you run with Vmware ESX Server?

Is it like any other Linux Server? I need the machine to be an FTP and SAMBA server as well in a small business environment.

acid_kewpie 05-09-2007 01:08 PM

you mean the host machine? yes it's just a devation from redhat enterprise. you can still run whatever you want, but you really shouldn't... if you have ESX running then surely run a VM to host these services..??

Echo Kilo 05-09-2007 01:12 PM

Would it not be faster and use less memory to run the Samba Server and FTP Server right on the Host machine though?

I only need one Virtual Machine (VM) to run a Windows Install so I'd like to allocate half the memory to the VM and the rest to the host.

acid_kewpie 05-09-2007 01:15 PM

yuo're running ESX, a clustered highly available top end virtualizaton suite just for one crappy windows vm?? that's insane. just use vmware server on whatever base liniux box you feel like. alternatively use xen if your hardware has a suitable hypervisor extension.

Echo Kilo 05-09-2007 01:19 PM

I'm not running it yet, but your information is helping me decide how to approach it though.

How much slower is VMware server - compared to ESX Server?

Echo Kilo 05-09-2007 01:21 PM

Also, how do I install Windows without running X-windows from my server?

Would you suggest installing it on another machine and then moving it over to the server?

acid_kewpie 05-09-2007 01:22 PM

it's not, it just isn't scalable to 256 8 way dual core hosts running 64gb of ram each running 4000 virtual machines from a 128Tb SAN...

vmware uses a very sensible client / server architecture for management. you could, should, install vmware console on your own desktop pc and connect to the server from there installing remotely.

Echo Kilo 05-09-2007 04:08 PM

I think I've almost got it. Your knowledge has been very helpful.

Just to make sure, you're saying:

1) Install my choice of Linux (Debian)
2) Install Vmware Server on top of that
3) Install the Vmware Console on a separate Machine
a. I have a windows laptop - will the Windows Console connect to the VMware Server?
b. What about the Web Based Managment Interface?
4) Connect to the Vmware Server using a or b (for a GUI) and do the Windows install

Is that accurate?

acid_kewpie 05-09-2007 04:12 PM

yeah that's about it. the management for esx does provide for better interfaces, but again at additional costs afaik. web interface looks like this http://www.eweek.com/slideshow_viewe...95&po=3,00.asp and will, afaik, give you the vmware console to download automatically when you try to use it through the management interface.
