Question VMWARE!!!! Can it be???

... Greetingzzz... guys....

I want to set up a Server-Client network in a single PC using VMWARE and Fedora Core. Is it possible to experiment with this network with 1 wokstation running FC Workstation and Server running FC Server in a single PC? If i deploy this topology using VMWare in the same single machine, is it possible to experiment with network packets sent to client from server using ethreal??

IS VMWARE CAN REALLY EMULATE ALL KINDS OF SERVER CLIENT BEHAVIOUR IN A SINGLE MACHINE?

THANX IN ADVANCE GUYS....

A s i F.....

Hi -

The short answer is "Yes, you can".

For example, I can run DOS, Win9x and Windows 2000 Advanced Server (virtual PCs) on my (real) 64-bit AMD running Windows XP/Pro. Or I could just as easily run the *same* (virtual) images if I booted my (real) host to SuSE 10.x.

I can also configure the network topologies so they can communicate with each other via different subnets (the default), the same subnet as my real host, or their "virtual LAN" can be completely isolated from the "real" host's LAN - it's up to me.

VMWare is a truly amazing product.

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Question

Thanx paulsm4,

But i saw there are 2 products, VMWARE SERVER & VMWARE WORKSTATION, why two?

Also, will the NIC have two different ip address for each of the two OS (FC SERER & FC WORKSTATION) that i'll install?

Thanx man....

VMware Workstation has much better networking support, but it's not free. With VMware server you can do the same stuff, but you can't edit the networks through a GUI, you have to use command line tools. On the other hand, VMware Server is completely free...

Everything "inside" VMware is just like a "real" network. It has a DHCP server that you can get addresses from, or you can statically assign them. By default it's DHCP will give a different address to each machine, they will all have different MAC addresses, and you can even install multiple NICs on each machine if you want (virtually). I run a lot of my VMs with two NICs, one attached to my "real" network (just as if it was plugged into my switch), and one attached to a "host-only" network inside of VMware. That lets me do things like setup IPSEC tunnels between hosts and test using a host as a VPN gateway to allow access to my regular nework, etc.

That's not true. Promiscuous mode simply lets you capture packets that aren't going to your server, as long as you're on a HUB not a SWITCH. You don't need to be in promiscuous mode to capture packets to/from your own machine. Any ethernet device can be placed in promiscuous mode (as long as the drivers support it).

And if your driver supports it and you want to turn it on
Code:
ifconfig eth0 promisc
and
Code:
ifconfig eth0 -promisc
to turn it off.
