Virtual users for ftp, ssh, http (public_html)

So I have an idea in my head what I'd like to accomplish.
I want to have a server where several users can access their own personal directories for data backup. I want them to be able to use whatever suits their needs for file transfer: ftp, sftp, ftp-ssl, etc. I'd also like them to have the ability to share files with each other (have a mutual directory between 2 or more users) and have a public_html directory.

Now the kicker is that I'd love for the users to be virtual. My google searches have left me with dust. There are faint traces of this being possible, but they all seem to be bogus.

Any ideas?
Should I just live with real users?

I should add that 1 real good reason for them to NOT be real users is that creating real users on the fly (automagically) through a webform is possible, but complicated. Creating virtual users (mysql database) is simple and doesn't run into permission issues.

Thank you for your time.

What do you perceive to be the difference between "virtual" and "real" users?? In any form, a user is just a record in a database of some form, and, in this case, some content in an arbitrary location. If you want to be super flexible in what you can access, I don't see any need to not want to use "real" users pulled from LDAP.

ftp, server, ssh, virtual
