Virtual Box

Is this good VM software? It looks intriguing; just wondering if there are better free options?

Yes it is, I am using it in Debian with a VM of XP.

I'm using it to run Windows and OS X and it's working very well.

There are a number of free virtual machines. They tend to differ in how they work. Some use the real hardware much more than other.

For a newbie Virtualbox or Vmplayer are good ones to consider.

The only argument against using VirtualBox is that it is now owned by Oracle. It's fairly easy to use (given that it's complex software and does have a learning curve). I've used it quite successfully in both Linux and Windows.
