Using NIS to manage logins across my servers?

I am thinking of using a NIS server to manage the login credentials of my web/database/file servers in the infrastructure (datacenter).

But is it a wise thing to do?
I'll have only one server to do that, and if that one server goes down.. i suppose no one can login?

My only intention is to better manage login accounts thats all.. is it worth the lot?

You can set up NIS master and slave servers. If security is an issue, I would reconsider using NIS

master and slave so as to achieve redundancy right?
hmm but i only can spare one box to do this... and i am already using virtualization to do it.

security is always a concern in any network.. but for this case.. yeah.. nothing exceptional...

so what you guys think? or i am better off creating the accounts manually?
