Use power off button in terminal?

I built this small server for a coworker that by nature of its purpose will get turned off and on often. I want it setup so that he can just press the power button to have it power off normally. Normally I can set that up in Gnome, but in this case I don't want to install a GUI. Is there software that can tie the button and the the poweroff/shutdown cmd together without needing a desktop environment?

Server is running Gentoo amd64, if that makes a difference.

You could just type "shutdown -h now" at the command prompt

I suppose I didn't include enough detail: I built a small server for a coworker who doesn't know anything about Linux. I set it up so that he doesn't have to log in or run any commands for the server to fulfill its intended function. It would be nice and convenient if there was a way he could just press the power button to properly shutdown, rather than my having to hook up keyboard/monitor or SSH and teach him how to do it. Right now I just have him do a hard shutdown, but that is obviously not so good for the file system. So I'm looking for some software glue that will run "shutdown -h now" or what have you when he presses the power button.
