Use MTA to load MBOX for POP3 transfer to Gmail

I have been searching (like many others, apparently) for a way to get my Thunderbird e-mails into my Gmail account. I have tried the Gmail Loader but it screws up the dates on all imported emails.

Since Gmail allows POP3 access now, is it possible to load something like Sendmail or Postfix on my local machine with my mbox file and then set Gmail to access it as a POP3 server?

Would doing this cause emails I have sent to be resent to others listed in the TO: or CC: lines?

EDIT: Qpopper/popa3d might be what I need. Has anyone tried something like this?
