Upgrading kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen to current non xen release

I currently have a server that is running on the Linux kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen and I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade it to a new official Red Hat non-xen kernel(currently 2.6.37.1).

What is unique about this kernel is that it is NOT a virtual system kernel but an older XEN kernel with proprietary material removed.

If it is possible I was wondering about any repercussions that may occur as a result of said update. This would include, any issues with potential data/driver losses as well as recovery procedures that may be used if something would happen to it during the upgrade.

Thank you for any help if possible.

As long as the kernel you replace it with supports the hardware it is running on, shouldn't have any issues. Just keep in mind to not remove the old kernel until you've proven the new one works without any flaws.

Do you know if there is any chance that when I change the kernel over and change the /boot/grub/grub.conf file that I may potential not be able to get back in if it does not work?
