update package

I have installed a older version of debian , I worry if I run apt-get update the server , it will update all package , kernel , library etc to my system , will it update anything in my server to latest version ? or it only update packages ? thx

"update" will only update the package list based on what is in your sources.list file. You need to do an 'install', 'upgrade', or 'dist-upgrade' after an update from a different branch (stable, testing, sid, or by name like etch, lenny) before the package manager will attempt to upgrade software.

What version are you running? What is in your /etc/apt/sources.list?
