unable to restore sql_ascii in postgresql

Dear Linux Masters

I've got a 80 MB sql_acii backup database from our previous crashed down open solaris pc. I am trying to restore it to the postgresql of Fedora 13 but this error appears:

pg_restore [custom archiver] could not uncompress data: incorrect data check
pg_restore*** aborted because of error

Process retured exit code 1

please help

Missing several bits of info here ....

Postgres version on both machines?
Locale on both machines?
Databases' locale on both machines?
File transfer method?

The first thing that springs to mind is that the file is corrupted,
and can't be uncompressed using zlib; second thought is that (not likely,
I know) that zlib on both platforms was implemented differently.
