Unable to create new postgres user..!

hi guys..

i just installed postgresql 8.2.3 & trying to create new user in postgres..
but i am unable to create it..

ERROR:
createuser: could not connect to database postgres: could not connect to server: No such file or directory
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?

well what's the answer to the question it's asking you? *IS* the server running locally and accepting connections? have you started the postgresql service?

yeah.. i started the service using pg_ctl start

but what if i need to automatically start it each time i login..?
