ulimit -n (file descriptor)

I have SuSe 9 path level 3
I am unable to set ulimit -n to unlimited
I have tried modifying /proc/sys/fs/file-max and /etc/security/limits.conf
restarted and tried setting up ulimit -n unlimited
it just does not accept. I am trying all these commands as root

Any one knows?
HELP

Anything you edit in /proc will get wiped after a reboot, it's a pseudo filesystem. The default on most systems is 1024. Running:

ulimit -a unlimited

Results in a operation not permitted. Try setting it to a value other than 1024.

ulimit -n 20240 <- worked for me.

I wouldn't recommend making open files unlimited anyways.

I have an IBM application which requires this value to be unlimited
IBM suggest the value to be unlimited, in AIX and solaris we are able to get this done not in SuSe

So set it very high then, to a number that would probably be very unlikely reachable. I still advise against this, you do know the reason there are limits right?
