My first attempt at a linux server is not going well, at least not finishing well. I hope I am missing something simple, please have a look, any suggestions will be most appreciated. Ubuntu server 8.10 with lamp and samba installed, ssh is running ok. I can ssh or Winsp3 from my local network but not from a remote site. I have a static address assigned locally and a static wan address. I have the port(22) forwarded from the router and have tried with dmz and the firewall disabled all with the same result. Router is a linksys 350n with ddwrt mega, I have no problem accessing the router or my windows system remotely but can get no further. I am wondering if I am missing something in the ddwrt setup as I have only been using ddwrt for a few months. Thanks

Can you ssh out from the machine?
What is your overall aim?
When you say ssh is running ok, describe in more detail what you mean?
Can you explain what ddwrt is?
Do you definitely have a ssh-server of some description running on the machine?

Have not tried to ssh from machine, can try that tonight.
Overall aim is a file server.
I am able to log on to the server using ssh. locally only, (windows computer.)
ddwrt replaces the linksys firmware.

Ok, if your machine is live, and you can login locally from another machine, then your problem is wider I would suggest. First place I would look is whether the port forwarding you have setup on your router is setup correctly! Look up the manufacturer website, and follow their directions.

Good luck with it, I had a similar situation, and the only solution I could come up with was to use the http://www.logmein.com option, through a windows box.

It does work, and gives you access to your desktop in windows, and hence you can log into your server. The downside is you cannot move files using the free version, and you must leave your windows machine running all the time. Not very green.

Just said I'd let you know, seeing as you have a windows box lying around.

Just to let you know that it was a problem with the router, simple, but frustration had gotten the better of me. Couple of hours away from it, sit back and think abit and it wasn't much of a problem at all. I am still in the beginner stages with linux so hoping that I have not bitten off to much by not having a gui for configering a server but will continue to pound away at it.
