Ubuntu Low Disk Space /Boot on LAN

Your assistance is appreciated.

* There are user computers that have no hard drive and boot on LAN an image of Ubuntu.
* All these computers can boot Ubuntu but now have the following message on startup:

! Low Disc Space
! The volume "share" has only
363.5 MB disc space remaining.

You can free up disk space by removing unused programs or files, or by moving files to another disk or partition.

Examine Ignore

* If Ignore is chosen, users can still use the interface of Ubuntu but are unable to load any programs.
* I lost remote access to the server.
* Directly connected to the server I try the following:

df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/trimserver-root 8.0G 7.2G 362M 96% /
varrun 2.0G 108K 2.0G 1% /var/run
varlock 2.0G 4.0K 2.0G 1% /var/lock
udev 2.0G 84K 2.0G 1% /dev
devshm 2.0G 0 2.0G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/md0 236M 101M 123M 46% /boot
/dev/mapper/trimserver-home 1016G 6.3G 959G 1% /home
/dev/mapper/trimserver-archive 60G 40G 17G 71% /srv/archive
/dev/mapper/trimserver-netboot 159G 72G 79G 48% /srv/netboot
_

* It appears that line, /dev/mapper/trimserver-root 8.0G 7.2G 362M 96% /, needs to be increased.
* I'm not sure why trimserver-home was allocated 1016G and trimserver-root only allocated only 8.0G.

1. Should computers be loading Ubuntu via boot on LAN from trimserver-home (Larger disk allocation) and not trimserver-root (Smaller disk allocation)?
2. What commands should I be trying to get more info or to make this change on the server?
3. Allocating trimserver-root a larger disk space will fix this problem, however, I need to do so with minimal risk to the server.

Even if people are able to make constructive comments on how I should tackle this issue would be appreciated. I don't ever work on this server and the person who does has gone on long service leave. My Linux experience is minimal so step by step instructions is required.

Thanks,

Either the size of the volume needs to be increased, or some unnecessary files need to be deleted.

The "/dev/mapper/" in the volume name suggests that logical volume manager might be in use. With luck, the volume group might have some un-allocated space (and it will be easy to extend the root partition). Could you try opening a terminal window and running sudo vgdisplay, then posting the output please (if this works, the important line is the one that starts Free PE / Size).

Also, it would be useful to see where the space is being used up. In the terminal, run the commands:
Code:
cd /
sudo du -s | sort -n
This will show the size of each directory in the root partition, sorted smallest to largest. You can ignore "home", as this is the mountpoint for another partition (you are also likely to get some "No such file or directory" errors for /proc which can be ignored).

This seems reasonable to me. It's quite possible to install a Ubuntu system in 8GB, but I expect trimserver-home contains the home directories for a large number of users, each likely to contain hundreds of megabytes of files.

Anyway, if you can post this information, hopefully it will be clearer what to do next.
