ubuntu is very slow
Hi,
I installed ubuntu 10.04 on my server. My server specification's: > Mother Board : Intel DH67Cl > Processor : Intel i5 LGA1155 processor. > RAM : 8GB > HDD : 1TB > Keyboard : Microsoft wired keyboard 600 (USB) > Mouse : Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse v2.0 my problem is after turning ON the server it is working fine but after some time (or keeping ideal for some time) it becomes slow, in the sense mouse is moving very slow, i changed the mouse sensitivity setting in system also it was very slow, and internal network and internet also slow. total system become slow. Please help me is that Intel DH67CL mother board not compatable with ubuntu 10.04 LTS version. Thanks suresh |
Open a konsole, and run the 'top' command. That will give you a display that samples the processes that are running, and tell you what is using memory and cpu cycles. If you see high cpu usage when running slow ( close to 100% ) for an extended period of time, that process is at the source of your problem.
Memory usage may be a problem also. You have 8 gig, and should never be an issue. You can see what free memory you have with the command 'free -mt' ( all commands without the quotes ). |
Try a newer release for your "Sandybridge" motherboard. Ubuntu 10.04 was released back in April 2010!
Ubuntu 12.04 beta would be my recommendation, this is the new LTS with support through 2017. Alternately you could install a supported video card as described here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...rboard-886681/ or install Ubuntu Server and run without a GUI. |
A silly question perhaps, but why are you running a GUI on a server? If you can go command line only, it will free up the resources used by the GUI. Otherwise, I second the suggestion of using top to figure out what's eating CPU cycles. I would also suggest using "free" and "vmstat" to see if all of your memory has been consumed and the system is swapping. This would definitely sloq it down. If that is the case, hit M while in top, and it will re-order the processes based on memory usage. Hopefully this will help find the offender(s).

A slow down can also be caused by an overheating CPU. I would recommend to have a look at the temperatures when the machines slows down.

Hey friends,
Actually u din't get my issue, slow is not in the sense that the process is slow, i mean that my mouse operation is slow i checked the sensitivity also, Actually when i start the server it is fine, if i keep it ideal for some time then the mouse operation is becoming slow. Thanks Suresh |
It may be your mouse then. I have an optical and swapped back to the older type. No issues anymore. Your query still begs the question why are you using a GUI for a server?

I Kept my server in cool area itself. I will reinstall OS with out GUI Later. I removed and inserted another mouse also. |
Not a mouse issue

Slow in the sense operation of mouse is very slow, sensitivity is very low. I will install OS without GUI later. |
You dont have to install complete OS without GUI. You just need to remove the Gnome or KDE component from the server.
