Ubuntu desktop used as an IP-cam server

Hello all, thanks in advance for any help. I have inherited (Volunteered) this system at work. We have 5 HP 5730 thin clients set up as camera views for production. Set up was done by an I.T. who is no longer with the company and left no documentation.I am new to the company and had only heard of Ubuntu prior to my inheritance. I am trying to figure out how to view the thin clients from the server. We need to refresh our views after power bumps. I have spent quite a few hours looking at info online and have gained a lot of ground, but still have not found my answer. Oh, I am an electrician. We are in a pretty remote area and the company expects us to gain knowledge outside of our realm. Our I.T. people are out of Portland and don't want to be bothered with this O.S. and are going to switch it to Windows to better support us. I have now grown a fascination for the Ubuntu and will keep playing with it at work and at home. Sorry to be so long winded. I hope I haven't put anyone to sleep!!

Welcome aboard.

There was a recent thread about someone who had used Zone Minder in Ubuntu 8.04. When he upgraded to Ubuntu 10 the Zone Minder software broke. He ended up going back to Ubuntu 8.04.

Just a word to the wise. Upgrading a working system can be a bad idea so don't even think about doing that on a production system.

Now as to your situation, I suspect that you may need to use a remote desktop type of application to view the cameras. There are several to choose from in Ubuntu. The one that is installed by default in my Ubuntu 10.04 system is called Terminal Server Client. Others have names like rdp and vnc. Look in the menu labeled "Applications" under "Internet" or "Network". These remote desktop clients work just like remote desktop in Windows so you have a reference. You will need to know the network address of the thin clients in order to connect to them. You will also have to know the name of a user account and a password to log in to these machines over the network.

I hope that you find Ubuntu Linux enjoyable. If you get this working then the company might delay changing these machines to Windows indefinitely. That would save them time and money.

One of the things that you may find appealing is the huge selection of free professional grade software available through the software package manager. In Ubuntu this is called the Synaptics Package Manager.

Let us know how you progress with this camera situation. If you have problems please supply enough details so that we can understand what you have done and what happened as a result.

Thanks a lot for your help. My biggest problem is finding what this guy has done on this system. I can find the icons pointing to the XPe thin clients, but cannot open them with the Terminal Server Client. I can vnc in to the ubuntu system from another P.C. running windows flawlessly, but cannot access the clients. I can ping them, but not view them. Tomorrow is my last chance before the IT guys come up from Portland on Tuesday. They have one guy that has a background on Ubuntu, but the camera network is separate from our intranet. I installed a second nic and tied into the other network, but failed getting an i.p. address. I am still not giving up. I am going to keep the system after they leave and kidnap one of the hp thin clients after I replace them with P.C's (their idea).I am going to get this figured out and also get an Ubuntu system set up at home eventually. It has gone from a challenge to a fascination. I hate losing, but....it happens. I will keep you posted on my progress. Thanks again. Have a great weekend and Merry Christmas to all!!!
