Ubuntu 6.06 Syslog crashes after logrotate
Hi all,
Allright ill get straight to the point with this one because its bothering me very much, and getting kinda critical...
I have a postfix mailserver that works fine except for the logrotate.
syslog.conf
mail.* -/var/log/mail.log
logrotate.conf
/var/log/mail.log {
daily
rotate 7
compress
sharedscripts
postrotate
/bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true
endscript
}
So when cron does the logrotate, there is a new logfile but its empty. After i restart the syslogd it gets back to its normal logging.
What am i missing? All this works with CentOS, why is Ubuntu such a pain...

What version of CentOS are you using? I'm betting it's not out of support like Ubuntu 6.06 is.
You said it crashed in your title but neglected to expand on that in your post. Is it crashing or not? What's the message? Anything in /var/log/syslog?

Why are so many server admins using EOL Linux distros? And just why are EOL distros still available to download?
Please, for the love of God: Upgrade to Hardy or Lucid and ditch Dapper, as it is absolutely way too old.

Well, thats the point. It just stops logging. So i get no errors.
And yea i wish i could upgrade these servers but i am the new sysadmin of this old crap and i dont want to upgrade such an unstable machine... Plans are to replace it, but for the time being i need this thing to work as i want to.
So anyway, any tips or tricks? :-)
